Loving Wife and Mother

Othelia Ruth “Ruthie” Mehaffey, 97, died Sunday, May 22, 2022 at Silver Treasures Assisted Living Facility, in St. Augustine, Florida.

Ruth was born May 6, 1925 in Pike County Kentucky to Willie Elswick and Jane Matney Elswick.  Ruth enjoyed growing up in Mouthcard and Pikeville and talked about riding a mule to the general store.

In 1943 Ruth graduated from Western Kentucky University with a degree in education.  She taught high school in Florida for 22 years.  

Ruth married William “Bill” Mehaffey in 1945.  The two were then lifelong companions and friends.  They were blessed with three children: William Raymond “Ray”, James Robert “Jim”, and Rosa Jane.  

Ruth lived a full, long life.  She and Bill loved to travel.  However, Ruth was happiest when she hosted frequent family gatherings.  She always put others first.

Ruth is survived by her children Ray (Sunny), Jim, and Rosa (Jeff); 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren; her brother “Tommy” (Robin) and relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bill.

Ruth will especially be remembered for her kindness, compassion and love of family and friends.

A small family funeral service will be held at Russell Haven of Rest Funeral Home on Saturday, June 11th, at 11 AM.
