Ernest “Doug” Drake, 74

Ernest “Doug” Drake, 74 of Fleming Island, FL passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020.  Mr. Drake was born in Albemarle, North Carolina and moved to Clay County in 1959.  Doug graduated from Lee High School, honorably served in the Army National Guard, and was a member of Shriners International.  He retired as a teacher for Middleburg High School where he was one of the original teachers when the school opened.  He was active in the local community by teaching swimming lessons, coaching, umpiring and announcing at the Green Cove Springs Athletic Association, and passionate about high school sports, especially Clay High football and baseball.

Over the years, Mr. Drake had an impact in many students’ lives and continued to recognize students many years after their graduation from high school.  He will be remembered for his larger than life personality and wit.

Mr. Drake was preceded in death by his wife in 2012, Bonnie Louise Drake, brother, Robert Drake, and sister, Margaret Lunsford.  He is survived by his sons, Troy (Kathy) Drake and Tracy (Kendra) Drake, sister, Helen Harrison, eight grandchildren, Ashlee, Karlee, Caytee, Regan, Nicky, Logan, Gavin and Ashley and six great grandchildren, Brantley, Adeline, Brinlee, Jayce, Blake and Aliyah.

In following with Mr. Drake’s wishes, there will be no formal service.
