Surrounded by her loving family, Audrey Atwood peacefully exchanged the hands of her family for those of her Savior on March 2, 2022 at the age of 85. Audrey was born in Washington, North Carolina to Major and Mary Archbell in 1936. She spent her childhood in Bath, North Carolina and moved to Norfolk, Virginia at the age of 15. It was then that she met her husband of 65 years, Russell Atwood.
Although she always wanted to be a nurse, her love for Russell was deeper. They married and God blessed her with two children, Cindy Toalson (Vance) and Larry Atwood (Debby). With so much love to give and wisdom to impart, five grandchildren were added to the family: Jonathan Toalson (Jackie), Olivia Stellato (Mikey), Stefani King (Chris), Hayley Atwood (Matt), and Elizabeth Atwood. Audrey became a great grandmother to Aiden, Hunter, Peyton, Mason and MJ.
Audrey is survived by her sister, Robin Hargrove (Steve); nieces, Kelly (Sean) and Jodi (Zach); nephew, Brooks (Tricia);and their children, Jackson, Taylor, Savannah, Sophia, Audrey, Caroline, Kendall, Allison, and Marshall. She was preceded in death by her brother, Larry Archbell.
Anyone who met Audrey knew that she was more than special. To know her, if even for a moment, was to love her. She was nurturing, caring, loving, devoted, hardworking, faithful, and kind. Whether she was preparing meals for others, tending to sick friends, keeping neighbor’s children, writing cards, encouraging friends, or just being with her family, she did it all to honor the Lord. She exemplified a Proverbs 31 woman. She had the presence of an angel, but the power and strength of a warrior. Her words were wise and biblical. She was not concerned with what seemed right according to the world, but what seemed right to God. She instilled the importance of family, trust, faith, and respect by not just words, but the life that she modeled.
Audrey – you were loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure. You built your house on the solid rock. You left a legacy of love that will remain forever with your family and friends. You were the hands and feet of Jesus. “Well done good and faithful servant. Your race is run and now you can rest.”
