Jeanette J. Merrill, 85, of Fleming Island, Florida, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, November 24, 2024. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Jeanette was a devoted wife, mother, and community volunteer who brought joy to all who knew her. She was an avid fan of Scrabble, enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, and cherished spending time with her grandsons.
Jeanette began her career with Delta Airlines, where she met her late husband, Jay Merrill, while he was serving in the United States Air Force. The couple moved across the country, living on various military bases with their two children, before settling in North Berwick, Maine. There, Jeanette focused on raising her family and became deeply involved in her community, volunteering with organizations such as the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and the V.F.W. POST 1698 Ladies Auxiliary.
A woman of strong faith, Jeanette was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fleming Island. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Susie (Sabo) Penman, and her sisters, Sandy Shimun and Patty Penman.
Jeanette is survived by her son, Andrew Merrill, and his wife, Cyndi, of Peoria, Illinois; her daughter, Sueann Monroe, and her husband, Marc, of Fleming Island; and her beloved grandsons, Aidan and Cameron Monroe. She is also survived by her brother, Tom Penman, and his wife, Lori Ann, along with several nieces, nephews, and many cousins.
Jeanette will be laid to rest alongside her husband at the New Hampshire Veteran’s Cemetery in Boscawen, New Hampshire. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jeanette’s memory to The Penrickton Center for Blind Children, a cause dear to her heart, co-founded by her parents in 1952. , https://penrickton.org/donations/donate-to-penrickton-center/. The center is very special to Jeanette as it was started by her family in 1952 to fill a void in the lives of visually impaired children.
